Edit PDFs in your browser, free

ClearwayPDF is a free online PDF editor that works without sign-up and without uploading your files. Add text, sign, fill forms, highlight, reorder pages and more, then download the finished PDF with no watermark. Because the editing happens on your own device, it is a good fit for contracts, invoices, applications and other paperwork you would rather not send to a server.

How to edit a PDF

  1. Step 1

    Open your PDF

Drop a file onto the box above or click to browse. The document opens in the editor in a second or two, depending on its size.

  2. Step 2

    Make your changes

Pick a tool in the toolbar. Every change can be undone with Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac), and Escape returns you to the selection tool.

  3. Step 3

    Save the result

Click Done to download the edited PDF. The original file on your computer is not changed, so you always keep a clean copy.

What you can do in the editor

Add and format text

Click anywhere on a page to place a text box. Change the font size, colour, bold, italic, underline and alignment, then drag the box into position.

Replace or cover text

The Replace tool covers existing text with a white box and puts your new text on top in one step. Whiteout on its own hides content such as an old date or a typo.

Sign documents

Draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or type it, then place it on the signature line. The signature is created in your browser and never uploaded.

Fill PDF forms

If the PDF has fillable fields, the form tool switches on automatically. Type into the fields on the page; they are flattened into the document when you save.

Draw, highlight and add shapes

Use freehand ink, highlights, rectangles, lines and arrows to mark up drafts, point out changes or annotate scans.

Organise pages

Drag page thumbnails to reorder them, duplicate or delete pages, rotate them, or extract a page range into a new PDF.

Watermarks and page numbers

Stamp a diagonal text watermark with adjustable opacity, or add page numbers to the header or footer in several formats.

Images and stamps

Insert a logo, photo or scanned image onto any page, or use ready-made stamps such as Approved and checkmarks.

Need something else? You can also merge PDFs, compress a PDF, make a scanned PDF searchable or password-protect a PDF. Step-by-step help is in the PDF guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. Every tool is free with no page limits, no watermark on the output and no account. The site is supported by ads.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The editor runs in your browser using JavaScript, so the PDF stays on your device the whole time. Closing the tab discards it unless you saved a copy.
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF?
PDFs store text as positioned characters rather than flowing paragraphs, so the practical way to change a word or line is the Replace tool: it covers the old text and places new text on top. For long rewrites, editing the original Word or Google Docs file and exporting a new PDF gives cleaner results.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes, the editor works in modern mobile browsers. A larger screen is easier for detailed work such as placing signatures precisely.
What is the maximum file size?
PDFs up to 100 MB are supported. Very large or image-heavy files take longer to open because all processing happens on your device.
