Split or extract: what is the difference?
Splitting divides one PDF into several smaller files, for example breaking a 60-page scan into one file per chapter. Extracting creates a new PDF that contains only the pages you choose, such as pages 3 and 7 from a long contract. Both leave your original file untouched.
Common reasons to do this: sending only the relevant pages of a long report, separating several documents that were scanned together, or getting a file under an upload limit.
How to extract pages
Open the PDF in the editor, then choose Split & Extract Pages from the tools menu. On the Extract tab, enter the pages you want. The new PDF contains just those pages, in the order they appear in the editor, and downloads as a separate file. To change the order, drag the thumbnails in the sidebar first, then extract.
Page ranges use a simple format: commas separate items and a hyphen means a range. For example, 1-3, 5, 8-10 gives you pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10.
How to split a PDF into several files
To break one PDF into several files, work through it one part at a time. For a scan containing three documents, you might first save pages 1-4, then 5-9, then 10-12, each as its own download. Rename each file as it downloads so you know which document is which.
Look at the page thumbnails first to find where each document starts, since cover pages and blank separator pages are easy to miss.
Tips for getting it right first time
Page numbers printed on the document do not always match the page positions in the PDF. A report might start its numbering at the introduction, after a cover and a contents page. The page range always refers to the position in the editor, so use the thumbnails to count.
If you need to remove pages instead of keeping them, it can be quicker to delete the unwanted pages in the sidebar and save the result. Deleted pages can be restored with undo until you save.
